on the Doris Day website for their efforts to publicize spay/neuter
in a fun way!
ARF is Featured in Cat Fancy Magazine!
| ARF was featured in the February
2003 issue of CAT FANCY magazine! Teresa Bullard received a call
from a reporter in Seattle informing her she got her contact
information from the Doris Day Animal League. She was doing a
story on Spay Day USA and wanted to learn more about ARF's
efforts!
The interview lasted about an

hour and a half. In February, ARF's benevolent efforts and
yearly participation for Spay Day was featured in the magazine! What
a thrill to be recognized not only by a famous actress and animal
advocate, Doris Day but to be recognized in a national magazine was
elating!
ARF Is Making a Difference! The Program is Working
ARF has issued over 240 spay or neuter vouchers and that number
is quickly rising! Since ARF's inception the request for spay/neuter
vouchers has TRIPLED and all requests have been filled!
When you consider that one unaltered female DOG and one unaltered female DOG and their offspring can produce 67,000
PUPPIES in six short years... and one unaltered female CAT and one unaltered
male CAT and their offspring can produce 420,000 KITTENS in seven short
years... the number of unwanted births that have been prevented is so high
that an exact number cannot be calculated! ARF is making a significant positive
impact for our animal friends! There are less suffering animals, fewer
homeless animals, less animals put to death, tortured or worse because of ARF's The
BRANDY FUND which is the voucher program that provides financial
assistance to guardians to help "fix" their pets! Nothing could be sweeter than
to know a difference is indeed being made in Wayne County for companion
animals!
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to our organization. The proof
is here - we are making a difference - our program is working!

Donations are Tax Exempt!
ARF is now a 501(c)3 organization! Donations are TAX-EXEMPT as
allowed by law. Despite
our continuous and tireless fundraising efforts, we need your
support whether it be a monetary donation or your time! Please
choose to support our benevolent efforts! We are making positive
strides and lifesaving changes for our animal friends!

Spay or Neuter Postage Stamps
The USPS is no longer selling the spay & neuter stamps and has
decided not to reproduce them. PLEASE write to the USPS and tell
them that you encourage them to produce more of these important
stamps! They have received a lot of feedback from people who want to
continue to buy them.
If enough peopleget on board there might be a chance that they
will put them back on the shelves. Please write to:
USPS Stamp Development

Washington DC 20260-2437
Please spread the word as we need to save these stamps from being stopped by the USPS.
Sample Letter:
I am writing you concerning the Spay/Neuter stamps. I understand that the supply of these stamps
is running very low and they may soon become completely unavailable. Please
do not let this happen. Below are only a handful of the reasons people
across this nation are begging you to reprint and continue reprinting stamps
with the Spay Neuter message until there is no longer a pet overpopulation
problem:
450 dogs and cats are destroyed each HOUR in the U.S. because
there are not enough homes for them! That is one pet killed every 6.5 seconds.
In order for every dog & cat born to have a home, the average family of 4
would have to own 24 dogs and 36 cats. ·
For every child born there are 45
cats & dogs born.
Only 1 out of 10 dogs & 1 out of 12 cats born ever finds
a permanent home.
It costs U.S. taxpayers and estimated 2 billion each year
to round up, house, kill and dispose of homeless animals.
So much can be accomplished with such a simple message, but the message has to be seen! There
are 1000's of individuals across the country working hard to help spread the
importance of spaying & neutering. Please, support their efforts. You must
know in your hearts it is the right thing to do. We need you, but the animals
need you even more. Please reprint the Spay Neuter stamps. Sincerely,

Campaign Pledge Form
They are not our property, we are not their owners.
Whereas, I believe that all animals deserve to be treated and
respected as individuals with feelings, needs and interests of their
own, and whereas I believe that animals are not commodities or
property to be bought, sold, disposed of, or discarded, I hereby
pledge always:
- to live my life with an ethic of respect and consideration for
all animals, rather than one of ownership in which animals are
considered mere property.
- to adopt and rescue rather than buy or sell animals.
- to represent myself as a caretaker, guardian, companion, or
friend of animals rather than their owner or master.
- to strive at all times to make the world a more just and
compassionate place for all beings, human and non-human alike.

Pet Friendly License Plates
1. 7-03 Urgent Information Regarding the Illinois Pet Friendly
License Plate The Illinois Pet Friendly license plate is in
danger without your participation-please order yours today! (see
below for more pertinent information), To date, just over 600
of these plates, designed to promote awareness about pet
overpopulation and to benefit non-profit organizations with
spay/neuter programs, have been sold. There is a bill pending in the
legislature that would discontinue any specialty license plates that
have not sold more than 850 plates by next spring. Many people,
including PAWS Chicago volunteers, worked tirelessly for the passage
of this license plate, it would be a shame to see it die due to lack
of sales. To order the plate, visit your local Secretary of
State/Driver Exam Station facility for an application and you will
receive the plate by mail. Or, to expedite your order, contact Pat
Westwood at the Secretary of State's office in Springfield directly
at 217-785-5215; she will be happy to answer any questions you have
about the plate. Additional information can also be found at
www.sos.state.il.us/departments/vehicles/petfriendly.html
The cost of the plate is $40 above the original plate issuance ($25 of that will go to the Spay/Neuter Fund, $15 will go to SOS special plate fund). At each renewal add $27 ($25 will go to the Spay/Neuter Fund, $2 to SOS special plate fund). The proceeds from the Spay/Neuter Fund will help Illinois animal welfare groups like PAWS promote pet sterilization programs-and fewer unwanted pets will be killed!

3. 10-10-03 HELP SAVE THE PET FRIENDLY LICENSE PLATES!
Each year in Illinois thousands of dogs and cats are killed
simply because there aren't enough homes for them all. To help fund spay/neuter
programs the legislature established a pet friendly license plate program
through the Secretary of State's office. Now, the pet friendly license plate
program is threatened because of an alleged trademark infringement from Pet
Friendly, Inc. in Alabama. Pet Friendly has a trademark for pet food, pet
toys, and pet clothes. Pet Friendly, Inc. previously threatened the state of Missouri
with a trademark infringement suit. Jay Nixon, the Attorney General of
Missouri told pet friendly that their threatened lawsuit was unfounded.
The license plates describe the owner of the car, not a product. The state of
Missouri did not back down from their pet friendly license plate program.
However, Illinois stopped selling the plate.
Please send a letter to Attorney General Lisa Madigan and ask
that her office issue a legal opinion as soon as possible. Office of Attorney General - State of Illinois 1001 East Main Street, Carbondale, IL 62901 Fax: (618) 529-6416

Dogs and Cats get cold too!
Outside dogs and cats need to be equipped with a suitable dog or
cat house to keep them warm and free of frostbite or death. Straw
is the best thing to use for bedding. Blankets retain
moisture, become wet and freeze, chilling the pet rather than
insulating. Straw helps generate heat!
Baking Soda could be Dangerous for your Cats!
Do you sprinkle baking soda in your litter box?
Do you sprinkle baking soda on your carpets?
Cats clean themselves and lick their feet in so doing baking soda
has 160 milligrams of sodium (salt) which more than likely attributes to
bladder and kidney conditions in cats!
Antifreeze can be deadly to pets!
There is an alternative - SIERRA ANTIFREEZE-COOLANT (available at
Napa and Kincaids in Fairfield).
How hazardous is ordinary antifreeze? Two ounces of ethylene
glycol antifreeze can kill a dog, one teaspoon can be lethal to a
cat, and two tablespoons can be hazardous to children. Because of
its propylene glycol formulation, SIERRA Antifreeze is less toxic
and safer than ethylene glycol coolants to children, pets, and
wildlife in case of spills, leaks, boil overs, or careless disposal.

Dogs
deserve better...
NO CHAINS!
This dog and this child
Should be a must-read for everybody who has or wants a pet
THE DOG:
When I'm a puppy, I'll cry at night, and you'll have to get up
every couple of hours during the night. When I'm sick, I sneeze, get
runny noses, run a fever, cough, and sometimes throw up. When I'm
hungry my stomach makes noises. When I'm tired I take a nap. When
I'm thirsty I look for something to drink. When I'm happy, I smile
and when I'm sad, you can see it in my eyes. When I don't get my
way, I throw a tantrum. When I get hurt, I cry. When I get hit, I
cower. When I get scared, I hide behind your leg and look to you for
assurance. When you leave me, I miss you. When you come home from
work, I get excited. When you ask me about my day, I get silly. When
you play catch with me, take me fishing, take me for a walk and
teach me stuff about the world, I look to you with admiration. When
you're mad at me, I feel sorrow. When you're proud of me, I feel
accomplishment.

We have the same feelings, this dog and this child. We will spark
in you emotions, of Joy and of Pride.
We have the same feelings, this dog and this child. We both feel
pain, we both bleed and we both cry.
We have the same feelings, this dog and this child. We both feel
the fear, of you not loving us and of dying.
We ask you to consider, why is one of us more disposable than the
other?
Sincerely,
This Dog and This Child
