FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Animals Requesting Friends (ARF) is again participating in the sixteenth annual Spay Day on Tuesday, February 23, a national campaign of The Humane Society of The United States (HSUS) to promote the life-saving benefits of spay neuter.   ARF is encouraging the citizens of Wayne County to clip ARF's $20 Spay Day coupon from the February 1st issue of their newspaper to sponsor the spay or neuter of at least one cat or dog in honor of Spay Day 2010.  ARF's $20 coupon can be applied to spay/neuter surgeries at any veterinarian through February 28.  There is no coupon limit per household.

To help ARF spay or neuter even more pets after Spay Day, ARF asks you to enter this year's Spay Day Online Pet Photo Contest before March 4 at www.humanesociety.org/photocontest.  Select "Animals Requesting Friends" to benefit from your photo's votes.  Each vote your pet receives translates into a $1 donation to ARF.  You can take advantage of the photo contest's easy features to share your pet's photo and story with friends and family, and ask them to vote for your pet.  More than 600 pets with the most votes will win stellar prizes.  The photo contest's judges includes Nigel Barker from "America's Next Top Model".

To help cover the expense of offering a Spay Day newspaper coupon, ARF will be at Kincaids from 10 until 2 on Saturday, February 13 for ARF's 9th Annual Valentine Gift & Bake Sale.  ARF will sell Valentine balloons, roses, cards, gifts for all ages, novelties, ARF shirts, baked goods and more.  To donate baked goods to ARF's fundraiser, priced items may be dropped off at Kinaids prior to the event.  ARF memberships will also be available during the Valentine sale at Kincaids.  Everyone paying ARF dues prior to March 1st will be entered to win an ARF hoodie.

Since Spay Day's inception in 1995, participants have altered an estimated 1,418,500 animals.  It has been a proud achievement of  Spay Day participants like ARF and other spay neuter programs that the number of homeless animals euthanized in the U.S. has fallen from approximately 13.5 million in 1973 to about four million currently.  That is still one every eight seconds.  By spaying and neutering your pet, you will have the peace of mind knowing that his or her offspring won't be put down in a shelter.  Over 400 homeless cats and dogs were euthanized in our local shelter in 2009.  For more information about Spay Day visit www.humanesociety.org/spayday.
